MT. AIRY COMMITTEEPERSON CARLA CAIN
ANNOUNCES RUN FOR CITY COMMISSIONER

East Mt. Airy resident and committeeperson Carla Cain has announced she is entering the Democratic race for City Commissioner. Two nominees will be selected in the May 21 primary.

Cain believes she brings pertinent experience to the office, which oversees voter registration, elections, data collection, selection of voting machines, and certification of election returns. She is a committeeperson in the 25th division of the 22nd Ward (Mt. Airy). She has gone throughout the city to register voters, estimating she has signed up over 2,700 people. She has also held voter registration parties in her home and educated voters on the candidates and offices.

“Voter registration is only the first step,” she says. “Then, we have to make sure these people vote. The City Commissioners should also be responsible for voter education and emphasizing turnout. There are too many offices that voters don’t know about and I would educate them about the responsibilities and importance of the different offices. There’s too much discrepancy in voter turnout from election to election. There is no such thing as an off-year election.”

As a committeeperson, Cain developed a website for easy access to City, State and Federal resources and voter education. Last year, she was elected to the State Democratic Committee and First Vice Chair of the 22nd Ward.

As for the selection of new voting machines, while she leans toward the hand marked ballot with optical scanner, she wants to ensure any system is secure and user friendly, especially for the elderly and those with disabilities. She favors focus groups so voters can sample the options.
